About Us : The Philosophy

"Joy, feeling one’s own value, being appreciated and loved by others, feeling useful and capable of production are all factors of enormous value for the human soul. "

- Maria Montessori. Childhood to Adolescence.

Smart Start Montessori will provide an inclusive preschool where all activities are guided by Maria Montessori’s vision of holistic development – cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual growth. We aim to develop a love of learning in each child and cultivate their skills for life in a nurturing respectful environment.

We embrace and implement the principles of Te Whariki, for children to grow up as “competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society”, We honour the Treaty of Waitangi and celebrate cultural diversity.

Smart Start’s objective is to work in partnership with parents, caregivers and whanau to provide a safe, creative and stimulating environment, where each child is nurtured, and their individuality is acknowledged and enhanced.

Our program develops children’s knowledge and skills through educational planning, and emergent curriculum. We provide an appropriate range of activities that meet the learning and developmental needs of each child while extending and challenging their capabilities. Through reviews, reflection, and professional development, we always strive to enhance our practice.

Children work co-operatively in a mixed age setting where the values of aroha, respect, empathy and independence are nurtured. Children are encouraged to respect and care for themselves, others and the environment. Our Kaiako (teachers) take every opportunity to help tamariki (children) to understand their own emotions and feelings and those of others.

We “follow the child” through observation, guiding each child as they direct their own journey of learning. Children have the freedom of choice within our peaceful prepared environment, whereby independence and cooperation are encouraged and valued regardless of age, ethnicities and abilities. We believe that a child’s play, is their work, which is purposeful and meaningful. They learn to concentrate, self-initiate, problem solve, organise themselves, complete work cycles and strive for their personal best.

Physical play is an essential element of Montessori. It supports the whole child-body, mind and soul, and promotes respect for all living things. Outdoors is a natural extension of classrooms, providing an outlet for children’s boundless energy where social interactions encourage social intelligence. The outdoors enriches sensorial experiences, where children touch, smell, listen and discover nature.

Smart Start will foster the child’s love of learning and education for living a purposeful life, where courtesy and respect for one’s self, others and the environment are paramount.
